Even though Medicare (aka Original Medicare) offers good health coverage, many people enroll in either a Medicare Supplement (aka Medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage plan when they are already covered by Medicare. Why? It’s because Medicare has no out-of-pocket limit, and its complicated structure of deductibles and copayments could land you in the deep end of unexpected medical expenses. Further, some hard-to-grasp Medicare rules may result in unpleasant surprises. (These pitfalls of Medicare are explained in detail here (about a 9-minute read).)
Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans help to make your healthcare costs more predictable, while providing protection against potentially limitless liability. The two types of plans work differently.
A Medigap plan does this by reducing or completely eliminating your copayment obligations under Medicare. (How Medigap plans work is explained in more detail here (about a 3-minute read).)
A Medicare Advantage plan does this by simplifying your copayment obligations and by placing a cap (an out-of-pocket limit) on the maximum annual amount of medical expenses that you must pay. (How Medicare Advantage plans work is explained in more detail here (about a 10-minute read).)
You can only choose one of the two types of plans to add to your Medicare coverage, not both.
Here is some pointers on how to choose between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap plan (about a 13-minute read).
